Irish in the Gaeltacht
In the Gaeltacht, Irish culture can be experienced in a completely different way to elsewhere in Ireland because Irish is part of every day life.

Those who speak Irish today are continuing an unbroken tradition that stretches back at least 2000 years. The modes of thinking, the rhythms and the world view contained in the language retain an independence that has survived for centuries.

Oral tradition
The oral tradition has played an important role in the continuation of Irish. Poetry, song and narrative prose carried the exploits of heroes, kings, queens and mythical figures across the generations.

Today Irish is an integral part of modern life for thousands of Irish speakers. Údarás na Gaeltachta is committed to the preservation and promotion of Irish as a community language in the Gaeltacht into the future.
