Gaeilge 2010
An innovative package of additional support measures, Gaeilge 2010, has been launched recently by Údarás na Gaeltachta. This programme is being rolled–out throughout the Gaeltacht.

Gaeilge 2010, is a joint initiative between Údarás na Gaeltachta and the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, aimed at stimulating the participation of local Gaeltacht communities in planning the conservation and extension of Irish as a community language within their own areas. This new initiative supplements an existing scheme, aimed at assisting local communities in formulating and implementing local language plans.

The first phase of these language initiatives includes the development of new language courses for all levels of competency, and the establishment of an initial 30 Irish Language learning and activity centres in partnership with the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.

Resources
There are many resources available for people wanting to learn Irish from teach-yourself books and tapes to DVD’s / CD- ROMs and videos of TV courses. In many cases adults seek to rediscover a language that they may have spoken as children. To cater for this continued demand in the Gaeltacht for Irish language classes, and to adopt a more strategic and co-ordinated approach, Údarás na Gaeltachta and the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, have launched Gaeilge 2010.

In order to co-ordinate the provision of courses throughout the Gaeltacht and deal with requests with regards to learning Irish at every level, Gaeilge 2010, aims to meet these needs with the following measures:
  • Sixty teachers have completed specialised in-service training on a regional basis in the teaching of Irish to the European Irish Language Certificate level developed by the Languages Centre of NUI Maynooth. They will work through the language learning centres that are being established throughout the Gaeltacht. There are now 28 centres operational and it is expected that this will increase to 40 as additional locations are identified over the coming year
  • The selected centres have been fully equipped with modern teaching technology and resources and are being provided with the financial and advisory assistance necessary to develop and promote Irish language courses for adults
  • To provide overall expert language guidance and support, Údarás na Gaeltachta has established a language planning advisory group comprising some of the leading language specialists in the country.
