Project
Iasc de Brún was established in 1985 as a fish processing company specializing in smoked salmon and crab. In the new millennium the company faced a new challenge: under EU and national environmental legislation waste matter from fish processing could no longer be disposed of at sea or in a landfill site. With the help of Dr Henry Lyons of Tralee, Iasc de Brún have composted their waste with tree bark to produce a soil conditioner.
Trials in Ballybunion golf course confirmed that theirs was a top class compost so Iasc de Brún have started taking orders from Ireland and the UK.

Údarás has supported Iasc de Brún since its foundation with various grants and leasing of buildings. For this latest compost project it provided research and development support and built extra factory space.
Results
Says Tadhg de Brún, founder of Iasc de Brún: “We wouldn’t be here without Údarás. Their support is invaluable. But we’re doing brilliantly and in the past two years have bought the building we were leasing off Údarás.”
Perspective
With support from Údarás, Iasc de Brún is further fine-tuning the compost, reducing costs and developing additional organic fertilisers for agriculture. What started as a waste recycling programme is fast developing into an offshoot industry.
