Through apprenticeship scholarships Údarás na Gaeltachta provides the opportunity for people to qualify as recognised craftspersons.
Criteria

Are you living in the Gaeltacht, fluent in Irish and at least sixteen years of age?

Are you eligible to register as an apprentice under the National Apprenticeship Scheme* administered by FÁS?
If you answered yes to the above you could be eligible for an apprenticeship scholarship.
*To qualify for the National Apprenticeship Scheme you need a pass in five subjects in the Junior Cert or its equivalent, or the satisfactory completion of a recognised preparation course. If you are over 25-years-old, you may be eligible if you have three years’ relevant experience in the trade.

Údarás na Gaeltachta offers apprenticeship scholarships each year and advertises them in the local media, although you can express interest at any time by filling in the Registration Form
- The scholarships are awarded on the basis of interview, practical and theoretical tests, and examination results
- The apprenticeship scholarships can be used to follow any one of the recognised trades
- Normally an apprenticeship lasts four years, during which the apprentice works with a recognised person or company. In addition, the apprentice spends three learning periods in a FÁS Training Centre or an Institute of Technology
- Those selected must identify a recognised company or contractor who is prepared to employ them for the period of their apprenticeship. Údarás can assist in locating an employer
- When you have completed your apprenticeship successfully you will be awarded the Fetac Advanced Cetificate, which is recognised internationally.
Assistance
An tÚdaras scholarship offers financial assistance to the apprentice and to his/her company or contractor at specific stages during the apprenticeship.
