GREAT Project 2013-2015

Funded by the European INTERREG IVB Programme and other project partners to the tune of €3 million, GREAT (Growing Renewable Energy Applications and Technologies) aims to accelerate the deployment of Smart Grid (SG) in North West Europe. The focus is on the provision of information to Regulatory Authorities on technological development, encourages small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and communities to develop technological solutions in relation to SG, renewable energy (RE) and distributive generation (DG). This project will stimulate SMEs to develop innovation and create employment, and will also provide structured co-operation of opportunities between the SMEs, research institutes and the technology developers.

Údarás na Gaeltachta are the lead partners and the other partners involved include economic development bodies which focus on stimulating innovation – WESTBIC, Basildon Council (UK), East Netherlands Development Agency (Netherlands); three universities, namely Wittenborg University (The Netherlands), Hasselt University (Belgium), and the University of the Highlands & Islands (Scotland); and the following organisations which are focused on the renewable energy/smart grid sector: Design for Sustainability (D4S) (UK), Smart Grid Flanders (Belgium), EnergyVille (Belgium), and Energy North (Scotland).
