Expressions of Interest being sought for LECo Project

LECo (Local Energy Communities) is a European project funded by the Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) Programme. The project aims to create a sustainable Local Energy Community that is self-sufficient by combining new innovative technologies with locally available natural resources (wind, hydro, solar and biomass) and also aims to make communities more energy efficient.

Údarás na Gaeltachta is seeking community groups to steer a ‘Local Energy Community’ into using more renewable energy and making buildings more energy efficient. Community owned energy projects have the potential to transform our energy system. These projects could encompass solar panels on the roof, a biomass fed district heating system, an anaerobic digester fed by local farmers, a collective insulation project or any other relevant project.
‘Templederry Community Wind Farm’, the only community owned wind farm in Ireland, provides a good example of the benefits of a community owned project to a rural area

The LECo project is open to Gaeltacht communities. A total of three pilot projects will be selected and support of up to €10,000 for each project is available for feasibility studies, energy advisors and to complete a business plan. The project is applicable only to buildings that are already constructed.
