The Gaeltacht covers extensive parts of counties Donegal, Mayo, Galway and Kerry – all on the western seaboard – and also parts of counties Cork, Meath and Waterford.

The population of the Gaeltacht is more than 90,000 according to the 2002 Census of Population and the total labour force is 30,000.

What do we mean by the Gaeltacht?

Those areas of Ireland where Irish/Gaelic is spoken as the community language of a large section of the community are known as the Gaeltacht. The Gaeltacht areas are designated by Government order.

What is Údarás na Gaeltachta?

Údarás na Gaeltachta is a Regional State Agency responsible for promoting the economic and social development of the Gaeltacht so as to facilitate the preservation and extension of the Irish language as the principal language of the region.

When was Údarás na Gaeltachta established?

Údarás na Gaeltachta was established in 1980 under the Údarás na Gaeltachta Act, 1979, and builds on the work of its predecessor Gaeltarra Éireann (1957-1979).

What are the main areas of economic activity in the Gaeltacht?

Gaeltacht economic activities include agriculture, fishing as well as aquaculture, other natural resources, textiles, engineering, electronics, audio-visual activities and telecommunications.

At what stage does Údarás na Gaeltachta offer assistance to businesses?

New businesses setting up in the Gaeltacht area may be eligible for financial and non-financial assistance. Assistance is also available to qualifying companies expanding their operations.

How many people are employed in Údarás-assisted industries?

These industries account for 7,346 full-time and 4,220 part-time/seasonal jobs.

How do I know if my company is eligible for assistance from Údarás na Gaeltachta?

A wide range of job creating enterprises qualify for state aid according to the Regional and Training Aid guidelines. Eligibility for assistance is assessed on the basis of an economic analysis of your business plan. Contact your regional Údarás na Gaeltachta office for guidelines as to what information should be submitted in the business plan. We will be happy to advise you.

What kind of incentive packages are available from Údarás na Gaeltachta?

General financial assistance includes employment grants, capital grants, rent subsidy, interest subsidy and training grants. Financial assistance towards technological advancement includes feasibility study grants, research and development grants, grants towards licensing and joint ventures. Non-financial incentives include workspace accommodation, advice, assistance with recruitment and training, start-up guidance, and legal advice.

What kind of language and cultural activities is Údarás na Gaeltachta involved in?

Údarás na Gaeltachta’s Language and Cultural Division is responsible for providing incentive funding for the development and administration of a range of initiatives to support the Irish language and culture. These include support schemes for nursery schools, youth clubs, Irish language classes, in-company language promotional programmes, courses through Irish, literary competitions, festivals and many other activities.
